SCNM President Dr. Paul Mittman: Disruptive Innovations in Healthcare

9/11/2017

SCNM President and CEO Dr. Paul Mittman sat down for a Facebook Live event with Dr. Dan Rubin to discuss the concept of disruptive innovation as it applies to healthcare and naturopathic medicine.

Disruptive innovation is a concept developed by world renowned Harvard business school professor and author Clayton Christensen.  According to Christiansen, disruptive innovation "describes a process by which a product or service takes root initially in simple applications at the bottom of a market and then relentlessly moves up market, eventually displacing established competitors."  In 2004, he correctly predicted that nurse practitioners and physicians assistants would disrupt healthcare in the United States because they could provide quality care at a low cost for many health issues despite not having the same degree of training as medical doctors. This shows that the concept is just as relevant in the world of healthcare as it is in a market such as personal computers.

In this Facebook Live event, Dr. Mittman and Dr. Rubin discussed how disruptive innovation applies to naturopathic medicine and how it applies to the future of the profession.
